Ensemble MeridianaLeipzig Connections

Ensemble Meridiana tell the story of the recruitment process for the post of Thomas Kantor, Leipzig, in 1722 through the music of four of the applicants. Initially, Georg Philipp Telemann was chosen out of six contenders, but when his employers in Hamburg offered to increase his salary, he turned down the Leipzig position. Johann Friedrich Fasch had also been among the favourites, but he had recently become Kapellmeister in Zerbst, and thought it was too soon to leave. The Leipzig position was re-advertised and one of the new candidates was Johann Sebastian Bach. This time Christoph Graupner won the election. However, since he turned it down, Bach was finally appointed to the post!
