A few words about the Georgian Concert Society

For about thirty years the GCS has brought musicians specialising in the field of Early Music to Scotland, as well as providing a platform for Scottish artists. It has built up an audience base of over 600 people who attend at least one concert per season, and a core audience of about 80 subscribers, drawn mostly from the Central Belt but with some travelling from as far away as Aberdeen and Dumfries.

Many performers and ensembles have made their Scottish debut, in some cases their UK debut, with the Georgian Concert Society (see GCS Concert History). Many of these internationally recognised groups have only performed in Scotland in GCS concerts. In addition the GCS has a policy of employing Scottish and Scotland-based artists, such as Lucy Carolan, Lorna Anderson, David McGuinness and Rob MacKillop. As well as presenting concerts the GCS also organises occasional educational workshops featuring visiting artists for amateur or professional artists or for schools.

The GCS is not about promoting popular baroque repertoire - other organisations do that perfectly well. The GCS deliberately programmes works that are unusual and challenging. Not only is the more familiar Early Music repertoire performed in new and enlightening ways, but season after season, a large percentage of the works performed receive their Scottish premieres. Historically informed performance by some of the world's leading Early Music practitioners often results in extraordinary and vital performances.

The GCS is run by one part-time administrator together with a dedicated and highly knowledgeable committee of volunteers. The annual turnover of the GCS is in the region of £30,000. A grant from the Scottish Arts Council provides the Georgian Concert Society's core funding and is augmented by ticket sales and various fund-raising activities: commercial sponsorship, in-kind sponsorship, grants, individual sponsorship, corporate sponsorship and through the many activities of the Supporters of the Georgian Concert Society.

The Georgian Concert Society is a charitable body, registered in Scotland, with registration number SC003740. The Society is supported by the Scottish Arts Council, whose assistance is gratefully acknowledged.
